Rooftop Letter No. 4: The Guns That Only Saluted

Pest faces away from the sunset. From the top of Gellért Hill the far city lay below, already in shadow: the Danube running wide and slow, the bridges not yet lit, rooftops going gray. Above me rose the Citadella, the fortress the Austrians raised in the early 1850s, right after they crushed the Hungarian revolution of 1848-49. From its walls a garrison watched the conquered city; sixty cannons were never fired in anger, only in celebration: a salute for the emperor's birthday, blank charges rolling over the river like thunder without a war. I stood at the railing, my back to the fort. The city filled the view. The walls are finished with watching. The watching just changed hands. The hill was made so an empire could keep its eye on a city it did not trust. Tonight the city keeps its eye on itself: window by window the lamps came on along the far bank, for no emperor, no occasion, just because it is evening and someone is home. The river went dark, then the bridges answered with light. Behind me the old fort stood over it all, still holding the view it never had to fight for.
